Dumbledore guides Harry through memories of Voldemort’s earlier life. Meanwhile, Harry finds a used Potions textbook filled with helpful notes and dangerous spells. Draco’s secret work and the book’s unknown owner turn a familiar school year into a period of growing uncertainty.

The ideas beneath the story

The story connects the desire for control with the refusal to accept mortality. It also questions the attraction of shortcuts: information can be useful without its source being trustworthy. Harry’s success with the textbook becomes inseparable from his responsibility for what he learns.

A question to carry away

Can we separate a useful discovery from the character of its maker? The book leaves Harry facing a task he can no longer hand to a mentor.
